In astronomy, short-lived jets of hot gas in
the upper chromosphere of the Sun. Spiky in
appearance, they move at high velocities
along lines of magnetic force to which they
owe their shapes. Spicules are usually seen
to form at about 45 degrees to the vertical,
and appear to disperse material into the
corona.
